Clover Club

In Albert Stevens Crockett 1931 Old-Waldorf Bar Days, he credits the Clover Club cocktail creation to the Clover Club House at Bellevue-Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia.

The Clover Club cocktail is named after the Philadelphia gentleman’s Club of the same name. The Clover Club itself had the concept of “A Club for Social Enjoyments, the Cultivation of Literary Tastes, and the Encouragement of Hospitable Intercourse.” and dates from 1882 to 1897 as seen in Mary R. Deacon 1897 The Clover Club of Philadelphia.

Since the first year of the Club’s existence, they used to have dinners at fixed dates, on the third Thursday of certain month, for the sake of peace and harmony. The last dinner of the committee was on December 17, 1896.

The Clover Club cocktail recipe would be confirmed as a classic by the International Bartenders Association (IBA) has one in “The Unforgettables” category.
