Vieux Carré
New Orleans is also the hometown of Vieux Carré cocktail.
That’s not strange when you look at the city location and what the Gulf of Mexico offered as a gateway to transatlantic trading, making New Orleans the largest port in the south. With that, in the 19th century, the population grew from 17,000 to 170,000 in a space of 50 years. In consequence, came extraordinary wealth and fancy bars and hotels.
Vieux Carré was invented in 1937 by the bartender Walter Bergeron at the Carousel Bar in the Monteleone Hotel.
Vieux Carré is named after the French term for New Orleans French Quarter and translates to ‘old square’.
