Warre's Port

The firm that became Warre’s was established in 1670, being the first British Port company established in Portugal, and by the close of the 18th century Warre’s had become one of the leading Port companies.

Andrew James Symington was admitted to partnership in the firm of ‘Warre & Co.’ in 1905 and in 1908 he became the sole owner of ‘Warre & Co.’

Warre’s owns three main mountainous vineyards, which are located in different parts of the best wine-growing areas of the Douro region: Quinta da Cavadinha, Quinta do Retiro Antigo, Quinta da Telhada, and other experimental vineyards.

Vintage Ports

Vintage Port represents the very best produce of a single outstanding year. It remains in the vat for only about two years and then ages in bottle. Vintage Ports will continue to age and improve in bottle for decades.

Cavadinha Vintage

Country: Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal

Raw material: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Barroca

Alcohol: 20%

Quinta da Cavadinha is located in a gentle ‘bowl’ formed by a sharp bend in the Pinhão River, in the heart of the Pinhão Valley. It is one of the main vineyards, making such an important component for Warre’s Vintage Port.

According to the official source, the winter of 2001/2002 was very dry in the Douro and the summer was dry but relatively mild. Picking began fairly early, from September 9th with the grapes looking in exceptionally fine condition.

Bottled-Matured LBV

Country: Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal

Raw material: Tinta Cão, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Barroca

Alcohol: 20%

The Warre’s Bottled-Matured Vintage (LBV) was matured in a seasoned oak cask for about four years in the Warre’s lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia, and is bottled without any filtration or fining whatsoever.

Unlike other LBV, the year featured on the bottle is the year of harvest and not of bottling. This because Warre’s LBV is capable to continue aging in the bottle, staying for a longer period than the four years in wood required by law, but also other four years in bottle.

This prolonged aging, first in wood and then in the bottle is key to the development style and complexity similar to Vintage Port.

The Bottled-Matured LBV is capable of maturing in bottle.
