Port Ellen was founded in 1825 by Alexander Kerr Mackay on the Kildalton south coast of Islay.

 

Port Ellen Distillery was closed between 1930 and 1967, and later again in 1983. Since 1987 have provided malted barley for all the other Islay distilleries and some rare and collectable malts continue to be released.

 

Port Ellen is one of the great lost distilleries of Scotland due to the closing, the value of bottles has exploded, becoming some of the most expensive whiskies in the world. Its whisky is a collector’s item.
