Bacardi
The Bacardi Cocktail is a variation of the classic Daiquiri which contains rum, lime juice, and sugar.
The cocktail became one of the most popular drinks with the growth of the cocktail culture in the USA immediately after Prohibition.
Bacardi brand soon realized that not every Bacardi Cocktail actually contained Bacardi rum. This posed a problem for the brand, who acted by issuing lawsuits in 1936 against the establishments pouring Bacardi-less Bacardi Cocktails, so protecting the company’s trademark.
During my research, I personally could find the recipe first in Harry MacElhone 1923 ABC of Mixing Drinks, where he specifies to be made with Bacardi Rum. That all right until I noticed that the recipe includes gin as well.
Also, in Harry Craddock’s 1930 The Savoy Cocktail Book, he published the same recipe but names it has Bacardi Special. He notes to be a cocktail made famous by Karl K. Kitchen, the well-known New York Newspaper Columnist.
Later, in the Albert Stevens Crockett 1935 Old Waldorf-Astoria Bar, the recipe loses the gin. The recipe is then confirmed by the U.K.B.G. 1955 Guide to Drinks.
