Fog Cutter
Fog Cutter is high in alcoholic content and has been called the “Long Island Iced Tea of exotic drinks”.
The recipe is the same in both Trader Vic’s original 1946 Book of Food & Drink and his revised version from 1972. The revised version carries a quote describing the cocktail “Fog Cutter, hell. After two of these, you won’t even see the stuff”.
Is true that Trader Vic’s was inspired by Don Beach to open his first bar called Hinky Dink’s in Oakland, California right after the end of Prohibition.
Such as is the case with many tiki drinks, there are also claims that the cocktail was invented at Don Beach restaurant.
However, the American restaurant owner, author, and historian of tiki culture Jeffy Berry seems to credit Fog Cutter to Trader Vic’s and to be one of his most historically popular cocktails, unusual for a tiki drink because of the oloroso sherry that is floated on top.
