French 75
Named after the French weapon, the French 75 cocktail became famous at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris in the early 1900s.
The cannon 75 was an official French design weapon built-in 1897. With 75 mm ammunition was a piece of rapid-fire artillery. It was commonly known as the French 75.
By the time, the Champagne cup was a popular cocktail, consisting of champagne, lemon juice, sugar over ice as a base, then fruits and other spirits were added.
The recipe developed over the next years, though similar drinks date to the 19th century like the Champagne Cocktail. French 75 was first recorded in Harry MacElhone’s 1922 ABC of Mixing Cocktails.
