Monkey Shoulder

Blended Applejack

Country: Dufftown, Scotland

Region: Speyside

Style: Blended malt

Raw material: Barley

Alcohol: 43%

Monkey Shoulder is a blend malt whiskey and not a blend Scotch whiskey. This means it is made only with single malt whiskeys – 100% Speyside – and has no grain in it.

In this case, the distilleries are on the same site which is owned by William Grant – Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie.

According to the original source, the name has honoured the heritage “in the traditional malt whisky-making process, malted barley is turned by hand by malt men using large heavy malt shovels. Years ago, some malt men would develop a strain injury which had a tendency to cause their arm to hang down a bit like a monkey’s, so they nicknamed it ‘monkey shoulder.”
