Yoichi Distillery was established in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, the first Japanese who mastered whisky-making in Scotland. To locate his distillery he valued the climate and natural features of the north, close to the sea and surrounded by mountains.
The whiskey is named after the Irish inventor and distiller Aeneas Coffey, who in 1830 patented the world’s first continuous still.
Nikka Coffey Malt was released in 2013. Made from 100% malted barley, distilled in a Coffey still and matured in old American casks.
This expression is not categorized as “malt whisky” but as “grain whisky” since it is not distilled in a pot still.
