Ramos Gin Fizz

Ramos Gin Fizz was originally named New Orleans Fizz. The drink dates back to 1888 by Henry Charles Ramos at the Imperial Cabinet Saloon in New Orleans, USA.

Ramos opened his own cocktail bar, The Stag, not long after where the cocktail became incredibly popular. According to stories from this time, the bar had to hire 20 bartenders to meet the growing demand for the Ramos Fizz cocktail.

With the onset of Prohibition, Henry served the last Ramos Fizz and was forced to close his bar doors. The recipe remained a closely guarded secret.

In the 1920s, Don Higgins, a writer of The New Orleans Item Tribune, persuaded Henry C. Ramos to give him the recipe for the Ramos Gin Fizz. When Ramos died in September 1928, the original recipe was published in that newspaper and heralded as one of New Orleans’ most important cultural treasures.
