Suffering Bastard
When considering the origins of legendary cocktails, it’s doubtful that Egypt is the first place to spring into anyone’s mind.
The Suffering Bastard is one of those beverages created by a legendary barman, in a time and place where new legends were born every day during World War II.
The cocktail was created in 1942 by Joe Scialom at Shepheard’s Hotel in Cairo, Egypt. He was looking to make a hangover drink for allied troops and according to the story made the Suffering Bastard, a “cure” for the suffering soldiers who complained about the poor quality of liquor.
The cocktail is also recognized as a New Era Drinks of the International Bartender’s Association website.
